New Zealand all-rounder Sophie Devine will captain the team at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. This will be Devine’s ninth consecutive World Cup appearance, and at 35, she is determined to secure the title that has eluded New Zealand since their runner-up finishes in 2009 and 2010.
The squad features seasoned players such as Suzie Bates, Lea Tahuhu, Amelia Kerr, and Maddy Green. Both Devine and Bates have played in every Women’s T20 World Cup. Rosemary Mair, who missed the England tour due to a back injury, returns to strengthen the pace attack, which also includes Jess Kerr, Tahuhu, Hannah Rowe, and Molly Penfold. For spin, Leigh Kasperek, Amelia Kerr, and Fran Jonas will provide variety suitable for UAE conditions.
New Zealand’s head coach, Ben Sawyer, praised the squad’s blend of experience and youth. Being selected for a World Cup is a great achievement. I believe these 15 players are our best to handle the varying conditions we expect, Sawyer said. He also highlighted Devine and Bates’ extensive tournament experience as crucial for leading the team through the intense competition.
New Zealand is in Group A with Australia, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. They will play warm-up matches against South Africa and England before the tournament starts in October.
