New Delhi

England allrounder Moeen Ali has announced his retirement from international cricket following his exclusion from the white-ball series against Australia.

Moeen, who last played for England in their semifinal defeat to India at the 2024 T20 World Cup in Guyana, shared this decision. At 37 years old, he felt it was time to step aside for the next generation. ‘I’ve played a lot of cricket for England, and it felt like the right time to move on,’ he said.

Reflecting on his career, Moeen expressed pride in his achievements, including nearly 300 international matches. ‘My first years were focused on Test cricket, but I enjoyed the white-ball game more under Eoin Morgan’s leadership. Still, Test cricket is the true test of skill,’ he remarked.

Moeen debuted for England in white-ball cricket in 2014 and accumulated 138 ODIs and 92 T20Is. His Test career, which started at Lord’s against Sri Lanka, included 68 matches. He finishes with 6,678 runs, eight centuries, 28 fifties, and 366 wickets across all formats.

Although he has retired from Test cricket twice, Moeen plans to continue with franchise cricket and is interested in coaching. ‘I hope to be remembered as a free spirit who brought enjoyment to the game,’ he said. He also highlighted his Test hat-trick against South Africa and the fastest T20 fifty for England as career highlights.
