Scotland fast-bowler Charlie Cassell, who stunned cricket fans with a record-breaking seven-wicket haul on his ODI debut against Oman in July, described the experience as ‘awesome.’ Cassell’s remarkable figures of 7-21 in 5.4 overs set a new record for the best debut bowling performance in ODIs, surpassing the previous record held by South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada. His exceptional performance helped Scotland dismiss Oman for just 91, leading to an eight-wicket victory in their ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 match.
Cassell, who previously made his T20I debut for Scotland against Australia, grew up in Perth after moving from Scotland at age six. He played alongside current Australian stars Cameron Green and Aaron Hardie when Western Australia won the U19 championship in the 2017/18 season.
Despite his Australian upbringing, Cassell maintains a strong connection to Scotland, his birthplace. ‘My parents are from the UK, and though I’ve supported Australia, I’ve always felt a natural affinity for Scotland,’ he explained.
Cassell’s move to Scotland was motivated by his desire to further his cricket career. Impressed by his performance, Scotland included him in their Performance Academy, where he took three wickets in his debut match against Yorkshire Academy.
Looking ahead, Cassell aims to secure a spot in Scotland’s squad for their upcoming tour of the USA, which includes a tri-series with Nepal. Although he will not be returning to Sydney University, Cassell is fully committed to Cricket Scotland and excited for future opportunities.
