Mangaluru
The National Environment Care Federation (NECF) has requested Dakshina Kannada MP Captain Brijesh Chowta to consider building a flyover from Nanthoor to Pumpwell to address traffic congestion and reduce accidents.
In a letter to Chowta, NECF Secretary Shashidhar Shetty highlighted the rapid growth of Mangaluru, which has led to increased vehicular traffic. The city serves as a key junction, connecting National Highways to Kerala and Bengaluru. The stretch from Mangaluru to Pumpwell, passing through Nanthoor, faces severe limitations due to geographical constraints, making road widening impractical.
The presence of commercial complexes and residential buildings along this route raises the risk of accidents, particularly if road widening is attempted. NECF has proposed the construction of a flyover from Mangaluru via Kuntikan, KPT, Nanthoor, to Pumpwell to ease traffic congestion and lower accident risks.
Additionally, NECF suggested creating a bypass route connecting Kundapur, Udupi, and the National Highway to Bajpe via Surathkal, and linking Bajpe to Bengaluru through the Polali highway. This bypass could significantly reduce traffic entering Mangaluru. NECF has asked Chowta to discuss these proposals with the NHAI and the central government for prompt action.
