Communist Party of India (Marxist) district Secretary K Neela has welcomed the fact that the state government has decided to provide grocery kits containing cooking oil, pulses, sugar, and salt to the BPL ration card holders, instead of the cash payment that was being given under the Anna Bhagya Yojana.
Requesting necessary steps to provide essential items at half the market price, she said that the idea of cancelling the ration card if the annual income of the family members exceeds Rs 1.2 lakh, instead of the income of the family head, is unscientific.
They have demanded to give up such an anti-people stance immediately. At a time when the prices of essential commodities are constantly skyrocketing and not falling, such ideas will push the vastly poor population into even more serious malnutrition and starvation deaths.
Moreover, the BPL standard is unscientific and demanded to be increased to at least Rs 2.5 lakh. She opined that if anyone in the family is engaged in income-generating work, such a person can be excluded under scientific policy, and cancelling the family card is not the right course of action.
