The experimental operation of the Yettinahole drinking water project has been declared successful by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. The project, aimed at providing drinking water to seven districts, will be inaugurated soon.
Shivakumar, who also oversees the irrigation portfolio, inspected the project in Kasavanahalli, Hassan district. He announced that despite delays, the project is now complete. It will deliver 24.01 TMC of drinking water to the districts of Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Bengaluru Rural, Ramanagar, Tumakuru, Hassan, and Chikkamagalur. The project will benefit 75.59 lakh people in 38 towns and 6,657 villages across 29 taluks. Additionally, 527 tanks in the seven districts will be filled with 9.953 TMC of water.
The project, costing Rs 23,251 crore, faced delays due to electrical issues. Five of the eight planned barrages have been finished, and around 1,500 cusecs of water have been lifted in the experimental phase. The Chief Minister will inaugurate the project before water levels drop. The project spans 252.87 km, with 164 km completed. Work on a 25.87 km canal is ongoing, but forest land acquisition issues have delayed progress beyond the 42nd km. An escape canal will supply water to Vani Vilas Sagar.
By July 2024, works worth Rs 16,152 crore will be completed, with final completion expected by 2027. German technology is used for accurate water measurement, recording 13.34 TMC of water flow from June 1 to August 20. Issues with leakages and excavation will be addressed.
