Surat
Surat is a city that seamlessly blends tradition with modernity. It handles 90% of the world’s diamonds and is a leading producer of synthetic fabric, contributing over 40% to India’s total output.
As part of the Developed India2047 initiative, Surat is poised to enhance India’s global economic standing by 2047 through significant infrastructure upgrades and industrial growth. Ramesh Vaghasia, former President of the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry, noted that Surat is one of four cities chosen by NITI Aayog to be developed into model cities under this plan. This inclusion marks a pivotal moment for Surat, which will see accelerated development in industries, businesses, and overall infrastructure.
A few months ago, NITI Aayog selected Surat, along with Varanasi, Mumbai, and Vizag, as key cities for economic growth. Surat has already completed its detailed economic plan, which Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel will unveil on August 30. This plan outlines strategies to boost industries like textiles, diamonds, chemicals, healthcare, and education, aiming to drive regional GDP growth.
Shalini Agarwal, Commissioner of Surat Municipal Corporation, emphasized that the plan focuses on accelerating GDP growth for Surat and surrounding districts by diversifying economic activities and improving infrastructure. Surat’s robust infrastructure and focus on skilled training make it a model for urban development and investment. By 2047, Surat aims to play a significant role in India’s economic advancement, serving as a model for other cities.
