In Budagumpa-Halasamudra village, Karatagi taluk, three cattle died after drinking water following fodder consumption. Two bulls and one buffalo calf owned by farmer Shivbassappa Sahari perished. A cow was saved by a veterinarian after prompt treatment.
Farmer Shivbassappa fed his four cattle at 6 a.m. as usual and provided water. Soon after drinking, two cows and a buffalo calf bled, excreted feces and urine, and then suffered breathing problems. The cattle died shortly after. The farmer alerted a veterinarian immediately.
Veterinary Officer Channabasappa Hallad and his team arrived and treated the cattle. However, two bulls and one buffalo calf did not survive the treatment. One cattle was saved. Animal department officials suggested that a chemical mixture in the water might have caused the deaths.
The estimated value of the dead cattle is Rs 2 lakh. The farmer, who used the bulls for agricultural work on his 10-acre land, faces hardship due to the sudden loss. The animal husbandry department has promised compensation of Rs 10,000 to Rs 30,000 per cow within a week. The case will be highlighted to Minister Thangadagi for possible additional compensation to the farmer.
