Train users have called for the replacement of the outdated ICF coaches on the 12619/20 Matsyagandha Express with modern LHB coaches. This iconic train, running between Mangaluru and Mumbai, reportedly operates with 25-year-old rusty ICF coaches. A viral video showing railway staff attempting to fix the ceiling of the alleged train has further highlighted the issue.
MP Kota Shrinivas Poojary recently brought the issue to the notice of Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, pointing out that despite repeated directives from MPs, MLAs, and public grievances raised over the past five years, Southern Railway has not replaced the old coaches with LHB ones.
In his letter, the MP said the Matsyagandha Express holds significant historical and sentimental value, having been inaugurated on the day the Konkan Railway was dedicated to the nation by former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee. While the train’s silver jubilee was celebrated with enthusiasm, passengers remain unhappy due to lack of updated coaches.
Ganesh Puthran, President of the Kundapur Railu Prayanikara Hitarakshana Samithi, said with a video going viral, the issue has once again been brought to the attention of the Udupi-Chikkamaglur MP, who has reportedly communicated with Southern Railway officials. They have reportedly assured the replacement of the coaches, he said. Matsyagandha Express, train No. 12619/620, was flagged off on May 1, 1998, when then Prime Minister AB Vajpayee and Railway Minister George Fernandes dedicated Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd. to the nation.
