BJP in West Bengal Assembly submitted a no-confidence motion against Speaker Biman Bandopadhyay. The proposal, signed by 50 BJP legislators, was delivered to Assembly secretary Sukumar Roy in the afternoon. Led by Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, a team of BJP MLAs visited Roy’s office to present the motion.
This isn’t the first attempt by BJP to challenge the Speaker’s position. Last year, a similar motion was introduced but was not admitted for discussion by the Speaker.
According to BJP sources, the motion outlines 18 reasons why Bandopadhyay should be removed from his role as Speaker. Their primary complaint is that the Speaker consistently dismisses opposition motions, regardless of their public importance, while allowing Trinamool Congress legislators to introduce unrelated motions.
Addressing the media, Adhikari accused the Speaker of partisan behavior and violating constitutional norms. He criticized Bandopadhyay for stifling opposition voices and preventing them from discussing crucial issues in the Assembly.
In response, Trinamool Congress leaders dismissed BJP’s motion as a political stunt aimed at maintaining relevance. They ridiculed Adhikari’s actions, implying they were mere theatrics.
The no-confidence motion marks another chapter in the ongoing political tussle between BJP and Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, reflecting the deep-seated disagreements over legislative proceedings and governance.
