In Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu, a woman and her granddaughter tragically lost their lives in a small landslide near Valparai on Tuesday. The victims, identified as A. Rajeswari (57) and her granddaughter T.S. Dhanapriya (15), were inside their home when a section of the hill behind it collapsed. The mud walls of their house gave way, burying them under debris while they were sleeping.
Rajeswari’s husband, Arumugam, who works as a security guard nearby, was away at the time of the incident. Fire and Rescue Services, aided by local residents, recovered their bodies. Dhanapriya, a Class 10 student at a government school in Valparai, and her grandmother were both pronounced dead upon retrieval.
In a separate incident in Thippampatty near Gomangalam, A. Hariharasudhan from Anna Nagar lost his life when a neighbor’s mud wall collapsed onto his house around 3 a.m. He died instantly, and his body was moved to the Government Headquarters Hospital in Pollachi by the police.
Following these tragic events, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed condolences for the three fatalities caused by rain-related disasters. He announced a compensation of Rs. 3 lakh each to the families of the deceased.
The South-West monsoon has been particularly active across various parts of Tamil Nadu over the past days, bringing continuous rainfall to the region.
