Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, has called for urgent measures following the tragic landslides in Wayanad. During discussions on Tuesday, he stressed the immediate need for a swift rescue operation and demanded increased compensation for the victims.
Expressing concern over the devastating impact in Mundakayi village and surrounding areas, Rahul urged the Union government to provide robust support for rescue efforts and medical care. He also emphasized the necessity for comprehensive mapping of landslide-prone regions and the development of a proactive action plan to address the rising incidence of natural disasters in ecologically fragile areas like Wayanad and the Western Ghats.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Rahul noted the alarming surge in landslides across the country in recent years. He underscored the importance of mitigating risks through effective mapping and timely mitigation strategies.
Earlier in the day, Rahul extended condolences to the families affected by the tragedy, which has claimed over 60 lives and trapped many others. Taking to social media, he expressed deep anguish over the landslides near Meppadi in Wayanad and assured continuous coordination with Kerala’s Chief Minister and local authorities for relief operations.
Furthermore, Rahul urged United Democratic Front (UDF) members to assist the administration in rescue and relief efforts, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among all agencies involved.
