Farmers struggle with pest infestation, moong crop damage

Farmers in Itagi, Talakal, and Masabahanchinala villages in Kuknoor taluk are facing significant distress this season. Despite good monsoon rains and the successful sowing of the moong crop over approximately 18,000 hectares, farmers are now dealing with severe pest issues. The crop, expected to be harvested in 90 days, initially showed promise due to favorable June rains.

However, the situation has deteriorated as pests have infested the fields, causing significant damage. The Nanju disease, which destroys seedlings, has further exacerbated the problem, leading to a decline in crop production. Pests are damaging the nuts, and many grains are being spoiled as a result.

Farmers have been spending large amounts on pesticides to control the infestation, but the effectiveness has been limited. The agriculture department has advised continued pesticide use, but it has not resolved the issue. The farmers are now calling on the government to provide appropriate compensation for their losses due to the pest infestation and crop damage.
