Dharwad
The IIT Dharwad campus, located on 470 acres in Chikmalligawada village near Vidyakashi Dharwad, has been designed with a focus on environmental sustainability. The land, previously used for mango orchards, tree plantations, and five lakes, was preserved during the construction of the academy building and hostels. The campus was officially opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year.
The goal for the campus is to become self-sustainable by 2030. This initiative is named in honor of Basaveshwara and Parasurama. The plan includes generating its own energy, primarily through solar power, and recycling waste through Zero Debris Construction. The campus aims to be completely self-sufficient, with no external water supply needed.
Rainwater harvesting has been implemented, and the lakes on the campus have been preserved for this purpose. The nearby Tata company’s unit, which holds platinum accreditation from the Indian Green Building Council, serves as an inspiration. If IIT Dharwad achieves its goals, it will be recognized as a unique example of sustainability worldwide.
The campus also emphasizes Sanskrit and Indian cultural values. The IIT Director, Prof. Venkappaiah Desai, stated that the campus will honor Basaveshwara and Parasurama by maintaining its green status and commitment to environmental and social responsibility.
