Five crows, two eagles, and another bird known as Kupulu were found dead near a newly erected mobile tower at the junction of Naringana village in Ullal taluk. The tower was set up despite local opposition and is situated near where the birds were discovered.
Local residents had expressed concerns about the potential dangers posed by the tower. Officials from the mobile company had assured the grama panchayat that the tower would not harm nearby coconut trees or affect resting birds. The panchayat approved the tower based on these assurances. There is now suspicion that the tower may have played a role in the birds’ deaths.
In a related incident, street dogs chased a boy in Taudugoli, leading local auto drivers to intervene. It is suspected that the drivers may have used poison to manage the dogs, which the birds might have ingested.
A crow was found dead on the steps of the tower’s transformer, with another carcass nearby. Asha workers, health department officials, grama panchayat PDO, and local leaders have visited the site and made a verbal complaint to the gram panchayat. Nawaz Naringana, Panchayat president, stated that arrangements are being made to send the bird carcasses to a forensic laboratory for analysis. Based on the results, appropriate actions will be taken. One eagle carcass is currently kept at the bus stand near the junction.
