A council meeting of the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), chaired by Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur, saw disruption over the decision to acquire nearly 18 acres of land using Transferable Development Rights (TDR). Congress Corporator Abdul Ravoof expressed concerns that acquiring land through TDR could result in a loss of Rs 50 crore for the city corporation. He argued that the land selected for acquisition under TDR is unsuitable for the housing schemes proposed by the city corporation.
Despite the objections from the opposition, the council ratified the proposal. Ravoof questioned the urgency of the decision, highlighting the potential financial loss for the city. The Mayor explained that the Urban Development Minister Byrathi Suresh recommended acquiring land on a TDR basis to build houses for low-income families. The city has received nearly 4,000 applications from families seeking government housing. In response to the Minister’s suggestion, the MCC has published advertisements for acquiring a total of 18.1 acres of land in the city.
Opposition leader Praveen Chandra Alva criticized the BJP administration for not being proactive in completing various development projects. He pointed out that several projects, including markets, the State Bank Morgan Gate NH 66 road, and the riverfront project, have been delayed for years.
