In Kalloli, Gokak taluk, a tragic incident unfolded where Vithala Chavan, aged 51, was fatally assaulted by his elder brother, Bhimappa Chavan, following false rumors about his daughter’s pregnancy.
The altercation began when Bhimappa Chavan accused Vithala of spreading the rumor that his daughter was pregnant. On August 30, Bhimappa, accompanied by Lakshmana Padatare, assaulted Vithala with a stick, rod, and stone. Vithala’s wife reported the incident to the Ghataprabha police station, leading to a case of attempted murder being registered on September 1.
Vithala, who was severely injured, succumbed to his injuries on September 5, despite medical treatment. Following his death, the police have updated the case to a murder charge against Bhimappa Chavan and Lakshmana Padatare. Preliminary investigations indicate that Bhimappa’s daughter is indeed pregnant, which may have fueled the violent confrontation.
District Superintendent of Police Dr. Bhima Shankar Guleda confirmed the development and assured that the investigation is ongoing.
