On Thursday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state’s police force has made significant improvements, reducing the case backlog by 75% over the past three years. In 2021, there were 95,994 pending cases, but this number has dropped to 18,286 by 2024.
Sarma also highlighted a reduction in the average case load per investigating officer. In 2021, each officer had an average of 52 cases, which has now decreased to 7.39 cases as of June 2024. He attributed this improvement to modernization efforts within the police force, which have eased officers’ workloads and enhanced the quality of investigations.
The Chief Minister shared this progress on X, noting that the reduced case backlog has positively impacted many people. Over the past three years, the state government has implemented various reforms to overhaul the police force. These include introducing Body Mass Index (BMI) checks to improve fitness among officers and a policy to dismiss any policeman found intoxicated during duty hours. Sarma highlighted that police should maintain high standards of conduct to ensure citizens feel comfortable approaching them.
