After the Supreme Court placed an interim stay on the requirement for eateries along Kanwar Yatra routes to display nameplates, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra condemned the order as unconstitutional. She argued that it violated fundamental constitutional principles, specifically Articles 15 and 19. The Supreme Court’s stay halts the directive, which mandated that the names of shop owners and employees be displayed outside these establishments, allowing only a veg/non-veg symbol to be shown instead.
Moitra expressed her satisfaction with the Court’s decision and thanked her party, TMC, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and the Supreme Court for their support. She praised her party and leader for defending constitutional values.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant welcomed the verdict, praising the Supreme Court for protecting the Constitution against what he described as divisive politics by the ruling BJP. JD (U) leader KC Tyagi also supported the decision, noting concerns that the rule could have led to societal division and expressing gratitude to the Supreme Court for addressing the issue.
