The increasing incidence of dengue cases in Bengaluru has sparked a surge in demand for papayas and kiwis, believed by some to contain nutrients that aid in combating symptoms and boosting immunity. This heightened demand has led to significant price fluctuations in these fruits across local markets.
According to a fruit vendor in Vasanth Nagar, kiwi prices have risen sharply from ₹240 to ₹280 per kilogram, while papayas now sell for ₹45 per kilogram, up from ₹40 previously. At the Horticultural Producers’ Cooperative Marketing and Processing Society (HOPCOMS), papayas are priced at ₹33 per kilogram, and kiwis are marked at ₹140 per kilogram.
Managers of supermarkets, such as one in Yelahanka, have noted an unusual surge in kiwi demand over the past two weeks, despite it not being as commonly sought-after as bananas or apples. Online shopping sites reflect the scarcity of kiwis, with prices ranging around ₹150 per kilogram when available.
However, medical experts caution against viewing these fruits as miracle cures for dengue. Nishanth Hiremath, Senior Consultant and Head of Department at Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Hospital, clarified that while papaya leaf extract is believed to aid in platelet production post-dengue infection, hydration remains critical for effective treatment. He advised against overconsumption of papayas or reliance on fruits like dragon fruit without medical advice, urging vigilance against misinformation, particularly on social media.
