High-resolution jammers have been installed at the Parappana Agrahara Central Jail, effectively banning the use of mobile phones by prisoners. Home Minister G. Parameshwara confirmed the development, highlighting previous incidents where phones were smuggled into the jail premises and inmates allegedly made unauthorized communications with outsiders, including those from other states.
The installation of these jammers is aimed at preventing such irregularities, Parameshwara stated. He explained that the high-resolution jammers initially had a coverage area of around 800 meters, causing disruptions beyond the jail compound. Responding to complaints, the range has now been limited to 100 meters to minimize impact on neighboring areas.
Parameshwara acknowledged concerns raised by residents about the jammer’s interference, assuring that steps have been taken to address these issues. We have resolved the inconvenience caused to the neighborhood due to the jammer, he reassured.
In addition to the technological measures, Parameshwara mentioned ongoing efforts to reform the prison system, including providing incentives for inmates to engage in educational and vocational activities. We offer opportunities like law diploma courses, carpentry, electrical work, and computer training to encourage rehabilitation, he mentioned, noting that such initiatives aim to facilitate positive changes among prisoners.
