BWSSB Proposal For Water Charge Hike Shelved Amid Public Outcry

Must read

The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has hit pause on its proposal to increase water charges, following a wave of public backlash over recent price hikes in Karnataka. The state government’s decision to defer the increase comes amidst widespread criticism over rising costs of essential items such as petrol and milk, which have sparked outcry and political opposition.

The BWSSB had submitted a proposal to adjust water tariffs, citing mounting expenses related to water supply and infrastructure maintenance. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar acknowledged the necessity of revising water rates, underscoring that prices had remained stagnant for nearly a decade.

The state government’s move to hold off on raising water charges comes in the wake of recent hikes in petrol and milk prices, which have stirred national debate and drawn condemnation from opposition parties and leaders outside Karnataka, including within the BJP.

Critics of the government argue that these price increases are part of efforts to generate revenue for implementing various welfare programs. As BWSSB said that, the decision reflects the government’s sensitivity to public sentiment amid economic pressures and contentious price adjustments.
