In Bengaluru, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has intensified its efforts against tax evaders following a notice issued to the shed in Pattanagere, involved in an incident with actor Darshan and his associates. The BBMP revealed that 7 lakh properties have evaded property tax payments for up to 15 years, resulting in significant financial losses amounting to hundreds of crores annually.
Currently, the BBMP is losing around Rs 1,500 crore per year due to defaults in property tax payments, despite efforts to collect taxes through e-khata systems. In response to this issue, the corporation plans to aggressively pursue overdue taxes, aiming to recover an estimated Rs 1,000 crore annually.
This crackdown comes after a period of relative inaction by the BBMP, coinciding with recent elections. The corporation’s renewed focus on tax enforcement targets both building owners and vacant plots that have neglected their tax obligations.
