A letter from AICC President Mallikarjuna Kharge addressed the relocation of statues of prominent leaders within the Parliament House complex. According to Kharge, statues of esteemed leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar were recently moved from their original prominent positions to a separate area without prior consultation. This action, Kharge emphasized, undermines the foundational principles of democracy. He stressed that the original placement of these statues was carefully considered and held significant historical and symbolic value across the Parliament House complex.
The statue of Mahatma Gandhi, originally installed on October 2nd, 1993, in front of the old Parliament Building, was particularly revered over the years, becoming a revered spot where Members of Parliament and visitors paid homage to the ideals of the Mahatma.
Similarly, Kharge highlighted the statue of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, placed in the Parliament House precincts on April 2nd, 1967. The location and posture of this statue, according to Kharge, carried profound meaning and significance.Kharge’s letter urged attention to preserving the historical and symbolic importance associated with these statues. He called for reconsideration of their relocation, advocating for their return to their original positions to maintain their intended impact and reverence within India’s democratic ethos.
