In a press conference led by the Deputy Chief Minister D.K Shivkumar, BBMP officials unveiled a comprehensive Climate Action Plan (BCAP) aimed at fortifying Bengaluru against the challenges of climate change. The establishment of the Forest, Environment, and Climate Change Management Unit within BBMP signals a heightened focus on environmental preservation and resilience-building efforts.

BCAP, launched on November 27, 2023, positions Bengaluru as the third city in India to adopt a comprehensive climate action strategy. It aims to curtail greenhouse gas emissions and foster resilient communities across seven sectors. The #BluGreenUru campaign, launched in conjunction with BCAP, calls upon citizens to actively participate in conserving and restoring Bengaluru’s natural infrastructure.

BBMP’s commitment to environmental stewardship extends to initiatives like the ‘HASIRU RAKSHAKA’ project, which has successfully completed sapling plantation across all zones. Plans are underway to escalate these efforts by planting two lakh saplings this year, involving schools and the broader public. Additionally, BBMP has initiated tree census and mapathon events to bolster the city’s green cover and engage the community in identifying potential green spaces.

Bengaluru has joined the esteemed Cities4Forests platform, positioning itself to glean insights and best practices from global peers. Moreover, BBMP has launched programs such as the ‘Fellows of Climate Action Cell’ and ‘Friends of Climate Action Cell,’ aimed at mobilizing young professionals and civil society organizations to actively contribute to Bengaluru’s climate resilience endeavors.
