Commercial Tax Dept Review Meeting, Disciplinary Action If Tax Collection Target Not Met, Warns CM Siddaramaiah

The Commercial Tax Department’s progress review meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday. During the meeting, he warned officials against any undue influence and emphasized using tax collection performance as a benchmark for transfers. Siddaramaiah stressed the need for achieving targets, indicating potential disciplinary action for failure. He instructed teams responsible for estimation, enforcement, and appeals to collaborate continuously. Additionally, he mandated the disposal of appeal cases within three months, with penalties for delays.

To expedite tax collection on goods other than those with negative IGST settlements, Siddaramaiah urged swift action. Acknowledging the rise in appeal filings since the redistribution of work pre-2017, the post of Additional Joint Commissioner was sanctioned to address this backlog starting July 1. Furthermore, he directed compulsory coordination meetings twice a month among estimation, enforcement, and appeal teams, with the preparation of action plans.Siddaramaiah announced another progress review meeting in the first week of September, expecting target achievement by then. Notable attendees included Economic Adviser Basavaraja Rayareddy, Political Secretary Govindaraju, Deputy Chief Secretary of Finance Department LK Ateek, Secretary PC Jafar, and Commissioner of Commercial Taxes Department C Shikha.
