England manager Gareth Southgate acknowledged taking a gamble by including Luke Shaw in the squad, given that Shaw hadn’t played since February due to a muscle injury sustained in Manchester United’s 2-1 win at Luton Town. The 28-year-old defender, who has been with United for ten years, expressed his eagerness to play in England’s European Championship opener against Serbia. However, he emphasized the importance of not rushing his return from a lengthy injury layoff.
Shaw, disappointed by fans questioning his commitment to the club after being selected for the Euros despite playing only 15 games for United last season, said, If the manager asks me to play, I’m never going to say ‘no.’ But I shouldn’t have played at Luton. It’s partly my fault and partly the medical staff’s. I came back too quickly and ended up with another hamstring injury. I did everything I could to be fit for United.
Regarding his potential participation against Serbia in Group C on June 16, Shaw stated, That’s not really up to me. We take it day by day, seeing how I feel in training. I would love to make the first game, but I don’t want to rush t because I only have one chance. If I feel something that could be it.
Shaw also mentioned that England’s 1-0 loss to Iceland in their last Euros warm-up game might turn out to be a beneficial setback for the team.
