World Environment Day Celebrations Focus on Sapling Planting and Plastic Waste Reduction

World Environment Day was marked by various activities organized by different organizations, including planting saplings, removing plastic and other waste from local tanks, and hosting special talks on environmental conservation. An oath to reduce plastic use, along with drawing and essay competitions on increasing green cover, were also conducted.

Saplings were planted by Rajya Sabha member D Veerendra Heggade, Deputy Commissioner Divya Prabhu, Deputy Conservator of Forest Vivek Kowri, and others at SDM College of Engineering and Technology. Justice SG Pandit also planted saplings on the court premises. Students and teachers from Bala Balaga School organized a procession from the railway station to the Deputy Commissioner’s office, displaying placards about the importance of protecting the environment. Saplings were planted at Dharwad railway station and the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

The Deputy Commissioner urged parents to plant saplings in residential areas to instil a sense of environmental responsibility in children. Additional sapling planting took place at Karnataka University, DIMHANS, district court, and various schools and colleges in Dharwad.

In Hubballi, government departments and social organizations celebrated by planting and distributing saplings. Arvind Srivastava, General Manager of South Western Railway, offered floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi’s statue and led officers and staff in taking an Environment Day pledge at Hubballi railway station. A Nukkad Natak was performed by scouts and guides, followed by the distribution of cloth bags to passengers to combat plastic pollution and promote green initiatives. The theme for World Environment Day 2024, “Our Land. Our Future. We are ‘GenerationRestoration,’ emphasizes land restoration, stopping desertification, and building drought resilience.
