The AIADMK will hold statewide protests in Tamil Nadu over the alleged failure of the state government to secure its share of water from Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. AIADMK sources revealed that a meeting on Monday will outline the protest plans against the government.

A senior AIADMK leader criticized the Stalin government for not obtaining Tamil Nadu’s rightful water share from these states, despite friendly governments being in power there. He noted that party General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) will lead the protests.

He highlighted ongoing issues such as the Mullaperiyar dam dispute with Kerala, the Cauvery River water-sharing conflict with Karnataka, and the Pallar River dispute with Andhra Pradesh. He accused the state government of failing to secure relief for the people of Tamil Nadu in these matters.

Tamil Nadu, being a lower riparian state, often faces challenges in enforcing decades-old water-sharing treaties and accords with neighboring states. The Supreme Court’s directives on these issues are frequently disregarded by the upper riparian states.

For instance, the 1892 pact between the then Mysore state and the Madras Presidency prohibited construction activities without mutual agreement. Tamil Nadu officials also pointed out that Supreme Court orders in 2006 and 2014 instructed Kerala not to undertake any construction on the Mullaperiyar dam.

The AIADMK leader emphasized that despite the DMK’s alliances with ruling parties in Kerala and Karnataka, the Tamil Nadu government has failed to secure the state’s water rights.
