The first five months of 2024 have been largely uneventful for Sandalwood. Without any ‘star films’, audiences have shown a tepid response to other offerings, prompting the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) to discuss with stakeholders whether it would be prudent to shut down single-screen theatres for a few weeks. Except for a couple of films by newcomers like Blink and Shakhahaari, Kannada films have failed to enthuse audiences.
However, there seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel. Veteran star Shiva Rajkumar’s Bhairathi Ranagal, a prequel to the hit Mufti, is set to release on August 15. This was the only star film with a confirmed release date. But in the last few days, two other biggies have announced their release dates. Darshan’s Devil, directed by Prakash Veer, will release for Christmas. Though the exact date has not been revealed, it is likely to be December 20 or 25. Incidentally, Darshan’s previous film Kaatera released in the last week of 2023.
Martin, directed by AP Arjun and starring Dhruva Sarja, has been in the making for over three years. The continued delays and the rumored rift between the director and producer did not do the film any good. With a budget speculated to have crossed Rs. 120 crore, a lot is riding on this film. In a grand announcement, the film team announced October 11 as the release date.
Sudeep, who hasn’t had a release (except in a guest role) since Vikrant Rona, was hopeful of releasing Max in 2023. But shooting delays have postponed the film. This week, the film is in the news again with the actor announcing the completion of shooting and a video grab from the film going viral. With three other big films already announcing their release dates, Max may well settle for a date around Sudeep’s birthday on September 2.
This leaves Upendra’s return to direction UI, Bheema, directed by and starring Duniya Vijay, and Bhageera, starring Sri Murali, as the only other big films without specific release dates. The pre-release business for satellite and OTT rights not being settled is said to be the reason for Bheema not testing the theatres, though the film is ready.
R. Chandru, who has announced six new films, is expected to release Father, starring Darling Krishna and Prakash Rai, this year. Meanwhile, Kotee starring Dhananjaya is releasing on June 14
