Nagasinha G Rao, Director of Child Rights Trust, representing the children of Bengaluru, has appealed to Madhu Bangarappa, the Minister of the Department of Primary and Secondary Education, to establish a helpline for enrolling children in school. This appeal comes in light of the release of a list of non-recognized schools by the Education Department.

Rao highlighted parents’ annual struggle for school admissions in May and June. Government schools offer clarity, but non-government ones pose confusion. Despite some schools lacking recognition, management assures parents of imminent government approval within two months, ensuring uninterrupted education.

In rural areas, parents may not differentiate between recognized and unrecognized schools, lacking guidance on quality and facilities. Important details like fees, teacher qualifications, child protection, and facilities are often unknown. Rao cited Article 21A of the Indian Constitution, mentioning the government’s responsibility to provide children with quality education in a safe environment.

Rao proposed a helpline by the Education Department to provide parents with vital details about non-government schools, such as recognition status, pass rates, teacher qualifications, child protection policies, and student facilities. He mentioned the need for easy access to this information on the Education Department’s website.

The timely operation of this helpline during April, May, and June could potentially uphold the rights of millions of children to education, ensuring informed decision-making by parents regarding their children’s schooling.
