BBMP Removes Signage Prohibiting Pigeon Feeding At Race Course Junction

Must read

The animal husbandry department of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) made a significant move on Friday by dismantling the signage at Race Course Junction, which imposed penalties on pigeon feeders. Erected by a BBMP contractor about a week ago, the signage levied a fine of Rs 200 on violators, aiming to safeguard the recent Rs 1 crore renovation by BBMP.

The decision to remove the signage comes amidst considerations by BBMP’s Roads and Infrastructure department to formalize the ban on pigeon feeding. Concerns raised by motorists prompted this review, as reported by BM on March 30 in the article ‘Pigeons to feast or flee?’ highlighting BBMP’s deliberation on the matter and animal activists’ perspectives.

A senior BBMP official from the animal husbandry department confirmed the removal of the board on April 5. However, the move does not offer clarity on BBMP’s stance regarding pigeon feeding. Previously, BBMP cited provisions in the municipality rules allowing the prohibition of feeding animals causing public nuisance.

Animal activists have voiced opposition, arguing that there is no basis for imposing penalties, and the diseases allegedly spread by pigeons are not listed by the National Disease Control Board or the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The removal of the signage raises questions about BBMP’s approach to managing pigeon feeding and public spaces, sparking further debate on the issue.
