Hundreds of farmers, organized under the Karnataka Rajya Raita Sangha and Hasiru Sene, staged a protest demanding a complete loan waiver. Farmers voiced their discontent against both state and central governments for their failure to address the drought situation adequately.
Gathering at Channamma Circle, the farmers accused the authorities of neglecting their plight amidst the severe drought and insufficient rainfall. Undeterred by the scorching sun, they blocked the roads, chanting slogans against the government. Subsequently, they marched in a protest rally towards the Deputy Commissioner’s office, leading to a verbal altercation and scuffle with the police.
Farmer leader Choonappa Pujeri criticized the government and district administration for their inability to manage the drought effectively. He highlighted the dire conditions faced by both people and livestock, emphasizing the urgent need for debt relief and implementation of the Swaminathan Commission report.
Echoing similar sentiments, farmer leader Prakash Naik likened the drought situation to a national disaster, expressing disillusionment with political parties and leaders. He called upon the President to utilize his special powers to waive all farmers’ loans and ensure effective drought management.
Kadasiddeshwar Swamiji of Shivapur, farmer leaders Shashikant Padasalagi, Kishan Nandi, Prakash Pujeri, Suresh Sampagavi, and Mallikarjun Wali were present.
