Water Shortage Despite Water In Rakasakoppa Reservoir

Must read

Belagavi

Throughout the district, temperatures are sharply rising, leading to a water shortage. Many towns and villages, including Belgaum city, are experiencing dried-up water bodies. Consequently, there has been a surge in demand for tanker water. Despite water being available in the Rakasakoppa reservoir, citizens are questioning the inadequate water supply in the city. High-rise buildings, particularly in rural areas, heavily rely on tube wells for drinking water, with over 350 villages still depending on them.

The declining groundwater level has exacerbated the situation in rural regions. The main water sources for the city, namely the Rakasakoppa and Hidkal reservoirs, are witnessing a decrease in water levels due to the intense heat. Additionally, water supply reductions are occurring under the guise of summer maintenance, further exacerbating the issue. The government has declared 15 taluks in the Belgaum district as drought-affected, with more than 50 villages facing intensified water shortages. Officials assure that there will be no water shortage until the first week of June, with the current water level in the Rakasakoppa reservoir at 2462.15 mm, a slight increase from last year.
