A Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) serving in the Indian Army was abducted from his residence in Manipur’s Thoubal district by individuals with criminal intent on Friday, according to officials. The abducted JCO, identified as Konsam Kheda Singh, a resident of Charangpat Mamang Leikai, was on leave when intruders entered his home around 9 am, forcibly taking him away in a vehicle. Although the motive behind the abduction remains unclear, initial reports suggest it may be related to extortion, as the soldier’s family had received threats in the past. Upon receiving notification, a coordinated search operation involving various security agencies was initiated to locate and rescue the JCO. Additionally, thorough checks of vehicles traveling on National Highway 102 are underway. This incident marks the fourth occurrence since the conflict in Manipur began, where soldiers, their relatives, or individuals associated with the army have been targeted by hostile elements for illicit purposes. The situation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by security forces in the region, particularly in maintaining peace and stability amidst ethnic tensions. At least 219 casualties have been reported since the eruption of ethnic strife in the state, sparked by protests against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. As the security forces persevere in their efforts to restore order, the attacks on them and their families underscore the urgency of condemning such actions and ensuring that perpetrators face legal consequences.
