Commemorating the 200 years of resistance against British imperialism, a group of organisations will be launching Naanoo Rani Channamma campaign in Kittur on February 21.
Prominent women activists from across India are expected to participate in the rally and a day-long programme in Kittur, followed by the release of Kittur Declaration promising to safeguard the Constitution and democracy, organisers said in a statement.

They said the idea to celebrate 200 years of Rani Channamma’s revolt against the British was initiated by ANHAD and National Federation of Indian Women and Karnataka Rajya Mahila Dourjanya Virodhi Okkoota. After the launch of campaign, the organisations will hold similar programmes at state capitals and in districts with a hope to reach out to more than 50 lakh women across the country.

Channamma was one of the first women to lead a revolt against British rule and wage a war in 1824 to retain control over Kittur. She emerged victorious in the revolt. Meanwhile, V Susheela of Spandana organisation said around 5,000 women will participate in the inaugural programme in Kittur. Dilip Kamat of Spandana said many prominent people, who are engaged in social service, will participate in the jatha at Kittur. Women will be releasing and receiving Kittur Declaration on this occasion.
