Leader of Opposition in the Goa Assembly, Yuri Alemao, expressed apprehension on Tuesday, stating that political defections are eroding confidence in parliamentary democracy. Speaking during Goa Legislator’s day at the Assembly Complex in Porvorim, Alemao criticized the shift of Congress MLAs to BJP, highlighting the immediate gains for power while emphasizing potential long-term dangers. Alemao expressed dissatisfaction with legislative assembly speakers, noting their failure to decide on disqualification petitions. He criticized their leisurely approach, asserting that playing with disqualification petitions undermines the pride and honor of Constitutional Authorities. Addressing threats to freedom of choice and expression from certain organizations, Alemao criticized the government’s failure to counter these threats effectively. He deemed the government’s silence as a bolstering factor for such forces. In response, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant defended his government, emphasizing freedom of speech. He clarified that the government did not suppress anyone’s voice and had not imported members. He welcomed those joining for the welfare of the state and nation, stating their decisions were not driven by personal interests. The occasion saw the presence of Speaker of Maharashtra State Assembly Rahul Narvekar and Speaker of Goa Ramesh Tawadkar.
