Delays And Financial Woes Plague Hebbal Flyover Expansion Project

The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), overseeing the expansion of the Hebbal flyover, faces significant challenges. A financial crisis and delays caused by pending approvals from the Railway Department, K-Ride, and other organizations are hampering progress. The construction of a three-lane flyover (715 m.) from International Airport Road towards Bangalore and a three-lane underpass on Yeswantpur-KRpur road began about three and a half months ago. However, less than 10% of the work has been completed in the first phase. The expansion project, initiated in July, aims to revitalize the Hebbal flyover, dormant for a decade. Unfortunately, the slow progress has led to issues such as dust, traffic congestion, and disruptions to bus stops in the area, causing further chaos. The ongoing construction involves a three-lane flyover from Esteem Mall to Baptist Hospital in Hebbal, with a total estimated cost of Rs 350 crore. The first phase, with a budget of Rs 94 crore, currently faces no funding shortage. However, BDA officials note that funds for the second phase are yet to be arranged. The Hebbal flyover, originally consisting of two lanes, has experienced a decade-long halt in expansion. With the initiation of the first phase, daily commuters now contend with traffic jams due to the unscientific construction process. This challenging situation is expected to persist for an extended period.
