Telangana’s prohibition and excise department inspector was suspended after finding Rs 6 lakh in cash that was purportedly intended to be distributed to voters.

On Tuesday, after leaving a hotel in Chengicherla, Medipally, near Hyderabad, Congress supporters discovered A. Anjith Rao, the excise inspector for Warangal Urban, in possession of the cash.

The Congress supporters attacked the official who was transporting the money in a private vehicle. They claimed that the official was transporting funds for voter distribution at the behest of a political party. They turned him over to the Election Commission’s flying squad.

Anjith Rao was suspended by G. Anjan Rao, Deputy Commissioner of Prohibition and Excise, after he took serious notice of the incident. Without authorization, the inspector had departed from the headquarters. The inspector may face disciplinary action, according to the Deputy Commissioner. It is thought that this is the first instance of an official being found in possession of the money. Since the implementation of the model code of conduct on October 9, the enforcement agencies have confiscated money, alcohol, gold, and freebies totaling more than Rs. 737 crore throughout the state. This includes cash of Rs. 301.93 crore.
