Botafogo, the leaders of Brazil’s Serie A championship, faced a 1-0 defeat at home to Cuiaba as Isidro Pitta scored the winning goal in the second half. Isidro Pitta scored the goal against the run of play, sliding a shot into an empty net after Botafogo’s goalkeeper Lucas Perri charged off his line in a failed clearance attempt. Botafogo, who had a 13-point lead at the top in mid-August, are now only six points ahead of second-placed Palmeiras, although they have a game in hand. Cuiaba is currently in the 10th position in the 20-team standings, trailing by 19 points.
