Opener Abdullah Shafique expressed disappointment over Pakistan’s performance in the middle-overs phase during their 62-run loss to Australia in the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup. Pakistan faced a daunting target of 368 runs after Australia’s strong batting display, with David Warner and Mitchell Marsh contributing significantly to their total of 367-9. In response, Shafique and his opening partner Imam-ul-Haq put on a solid partnership of 134 runs, with Shafique scoring 64 and Haq adding 70 to the total. However, leg-spinner Adam Zampa’s brilliant performance, with figures of 4-53, led to Pakistan being bowled out for 405 in 45.3 overs. Shafique acknowledged Australia’s strong performance and expressed hope that Pakistan would learn from the match and perform better in future games. When asked if the target of 368 was achievable on a flat pitch with small boundaries, Shafique stated that they had successfully chased 345 in a previous match against Sri Lanka, highlighting Pakistan’s confidence in their batting unit. However, he credited Australia for their excellent bowling and fielding. Following this defeat, Pakistan now has two wins and two losses in the competition. Shafique assured that they would focus on improving their batting performance, especially during the middle overs, as they prepare to face Afghanistan in their upcoming match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Monday.
