On World Food Day, leaders from various sectors came together to highlight the need for urgent action to transform food systems to reduce emissions and build resilience. This call to action is in line with the upcoming UN Climate Conference, COP28, where food systems transformation is a top priority. There is growing evidence that agriculture and food systems are both a cause and casualty of climate change. They are responsible for a significant portion of global emissions, but they also have substantial potential for mitigation, with the capacity to reduce global temperatures by up to 0.5 degrees Celsius. Professor David Nabarro, Senior Advisor to the COP28 Food Systems Team, emphasized the importance of addressing the challenges associated with agriculture and food systems, stating that it is crucial for the well-being of future generations. Gonzalo Munoz, former High-Level Champion for COP25 and Lead on the COP28 Non-State Actors Agenda for Food Systems, highlighted the role of food systems in mitigating and adapting to climate change. Transforming food systems can provide healthy and sustainable food for all while protecting and restoring nature. This World Food Day serves as a reminder of the critical role food systems play in addressing climate change and the importance of taking action to ensure a sustainable and resilient future for all.
