President-elect Donald Trump has nominated former U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra to serve as the United States’ Ambassador to Canada. In a statement released on Wednesday night, Trump expressed his satisfaction with the choice, saying, “I am very pleased to announce that former Ambassador, and former Congressman, Pete Hoekstra, has been nominated as my United States Ambassador to Canada.”
Trump highlighted Hoekstra’s deep roots in Michigan, noting that he represented Michigan’s 2nd District in Congress for nearly 20 years, including serving as Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. Trump credited Hoekstra with playing a significant role in his campaign as Chairman of the Michigan Republican Party. “Pete is well-respected in the Great State of Michigan— a state we won sizably,” Trump added.
The President-elect also pointed out his renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which resulted in the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), emphasizing the benefits this trade deal brought to American farmers and working families. Trump said, “We brought Trade with Mexico and Canada to a level playing field for our wonderful Farmers and Working Families.”
Trump lauded Hoekstra’s performance as the United States Ambassador to the Netherlands during his first term and expressed confidence that Hoekstra would serve the country well in his new role. “He will continue to represent our Country well in this new role. Thank you, Pete!” Trump concluded.
Hoekstra took to X to share his gratitude, stating, “Honored for the opportunity to serve. Thank you, Mr. President!” Hoekstra’s nomination comes as Trump finalizes his foreign policy and national security team ahead of his formal inauguration in January 2025.
