In a powerful demonstration of solidarity, Bengaluru witnessed the participation of over 950 individuals from various sectors, including corporates, colleges, and NGOs, in the Bengaluru edition of the global Walk for Freedom aimed at combating human trafficking. Led by The Movement India in collaboration with several organizations such as Dream India Network, Impact India Consortium, and Oasis India, the event served as a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle against modern-day slavery.
The walk, held at St. Teresa Degree College for Women, Chamrajpet, commenced after a heartfelt pledge by participants to actively contribute to the eradication of human trafficking in their lifetimes. Spearheaded by Mr. P. Nagesh Kumar, Superintendent of the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of Police, Bengaluru, and Fr. Edward Thomas, Founder of Dream India Network, the event emphasized the critical role of collective action in addressing this global challenge.
Amidst silence, participants held placards displaying striking statistics and information related to human trafficking, promoting awareness along the public roads surrounding the college premises. Notably, Bengaluru’s participation in this initiative for the third consecutive year echoed the city’s commitment to combating this heinous crime.
Statistics underscore the urgency of the cause, with 49.6 million people worldwide ensnared in various forms of modern-day slavery, as reported by the International Labour Organization.
The event’s global footprint extended beyond Bengaluru, with Walks for Freedom organized in over 100 locations across 14 states in India, attracting a collective participation of more than 25,000 individuals. This resounding show of solidarity serves as a testament to the resolute determination of communities to eliminate the scourge of human trafficking.
