Haveri

Mahatma Gandhi and Haveri have a relationship dating back to the 1930s. Mylara Mahadevappa   was one of the few young freedom fighters who participated when Mahatma Gandhi started the Dandi Satyagraha on 12 March 1930. Mylara Mahadevappa hails from Motebennur village in Byadagi taluk of the district. Mahatma Gandhi had a special interest in Haveri since the Dandi Satyagraha. Mahatma Gandhi, who was quite curious, came to Haveri on March 1, 1934.

Gandhiji came to Haveri and walked from the High School ground to the Honda Mutt to have darshan of Rajendra Guruji. He later laid the foundation stone for the Dharamshala building near the railway station in the city.   Gandhi Bhavan has now been constructed at the site of Dharamshala where Gandhiji had laid the foundation stone.

The  District Administration and the Information and Public Relations Department have worked hard to make Gandhi Bhavan completely Gandhian. Gandhi Bhavan has been constructed at a cost of around Rs 3 crore. According to  Information Officer Dr. Ranganath, Gandhiji Bhavan was built with the good intention of inculcating gandhian principles among the youth.

Gandhiji Bhavan has been constructed very specially and has been constructed to withstand the atmosphere of both Haveri Malnad and Aremalanadu region. As you step into Gandhi Bhavan, you will find the artworks, idols and statues there. A bronze statue of Gandhiji is installed in a meditative state,  Gandhiji Bhavan is very special, Ranganath said. The efforts of the district administration and the Information and Public Relations Department in making the Bhavan a complete Gandhian one, including his principles and ideologies, are evident.
