Luis Rubiales has stepped down from his positions as president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and vice president of UEFA following intense criticism over his unwanted kiss with FIFA Women’s World Cup champion Jennifer Hermoso. Rubiales announced his resignation in a statement, citing his suspension by FIFA and ongoing proceedings against him. He expressed his belief that his departure would contribute to the stability needed for Spain’s joint bid with Morocco and Portugal to host the 2030 World Cup. In his statement, Rubiales said, After the quick suspension carried out by FIFA along with the ongoing proceedings against me, it is evident that I will not be able to return to my position. Insisting on remaining in limbo and clinging to it will not contribute to anything positive, neither for the Federation nor for Spanish football. The Royal Spanish Football Federation confirmed Rubiales’ resignation from the RFEF and his position as vice president of UEFA. The controversy arose when Rubiales kissed Hermoso after the Spanish team’s victory in the World Cup final on August 20. The incident sparked criticism, with Hermoso asserting that she did not give consent and felt disrespected, contrary to Rubiales’ characterization of the kiss as mutual. FIFA provisionally suspended Rubiales for 90 days while a disciplinary investigation is ongoing. Pedro Rocha has taken over as interim president of the RFEF following Rubiales’ resignation. Rubiales expressed his hope that his departure would contribute to the unity of Europe and Africa in the joint bid for the 2030 World Cup.
