A rare moth, larger than the palm of the hand and considered to be the giant in India, has been found in Ankola. The moth, which was found in front of the courtyard of the house of Jyothi Naik of Aslagade in the taluk, was spotted by the birds when they tried to bite it and was rescued by govinda Naik, a local.

Usually many people think of it as a butterfly, in fact, it is not a butterfly but a giant moth. Its scientific name is Atacus Atlas, also known as Atlas Moth or Moth. Its life span is just one week, said Gopal Naik, a forest guard.
