Insurance Coverage For 14 Dasara Elephants From September 1 To October End

As a precautionary measure, 14 elephants and forest staff accompanying mahouts, kavadigas and elephants have been insured for participating in dasara festivities. The insurance will be valid from September 1 to the end of October. As a precautionary measure every year, the forest department staff, including elephants, mahouts and kavadigas, who participate in dasara festivities, are insured. In addition to the nine elephants who have already arrived to participate in the Dasara festivities, the insurance cover has been extended to five elephants arriving in the second phase. DCF Saurav Kumar informed that 9 elephants, 5 mahouts, 14 kavadigas, six special mahouts, forest officers RFO, DRFO, veterinarians, helpers and other staff have been insured by United India Insurance Company as a precautionary measure from September 14 to October end. Out of the 14 elephants, 10 males will get Rs 50 lakh and four females will get Rs 18 lakh, Rs 50 lakh for loss of life and property. In addition to this, 42 others, including mahouts, kavadigas, special mahouts, forest department staff, supervisory staff, were insured for Rs 84 lakh at the rate of Rs 2 lakh each.   DCF Saurav Kumar said that a sum of Rs 2.02 crore has been insured by United India Insurance Company for all those participating in dasara festivities this year, including gajapada mahouts, kavadigas and forest staff.  The Insurance coverage will be effective till October 26, when the elephants go back to the forest.
