Bengaluru

In a significant move toward safer and more aesthetically pleasing cities, Karnataka’s Minister for Energy, Shri. KJ George, inaugurated the groundbreaking Underground Distribution Transformer Centre equipped with a 500kVA transformer and an 8Way Solid-State RMU. This marks a pioneering achievement in the power distribution sector, being the first of its kind in DISCOMS across India. Under the leadership of BESCOM (Bangalore Electricity Supply Company), the ambitious project aims to systematically convert high-tension overhead power lines into underground networks throughout Bengaluru city. The advantages of such an underground system are manifold, including enhanced safety, increased reliability, and improved urban aesthetics. The vision extends beyond just power lines; it encompasses the transformation of the entire distribution system, including Distribution Transformers, Ring Main Units, and Feeder Pillar Boxes, into an underground infrastructure. This forward-thinking approach is not only about modernization but also about creating safe, unobstructed pedestrian paths in the bustling cityscape. As part of the initial pilot phase, the complete underground distribution system is being trialed in the Malleshwaram Ward. This strategic move holds the promise of a cleaner, safer, and more visually appealing urban environment for the residents of Bengaluru. Karnataka’s innovative approach to underground power distribution exemplifies a commitment to creating modern, livable cities that prioritize safety, efficiency, and visual appeal. This project serves as a model for other regions seeking to improve their urban landscapes while ensuring reliable power distribution.

Advantages Of The Underground Distribution Transformer Centre

The initiative encourages citizens to use footpaths, contributing to a safer and healthier urban environment. With underground equipment, maintenance work becomes less intrusive, minimizing disruptions to footpaths and roads. The utilization of land resources is improved, and the need to relocate equipment to government spaces or buildings is reduced. Underground systems protect electrical equipment from severe weather conditions, including storms and high temperatures, leading to increased reliability and longer operational lifespans. The implementation of a smart underground distribution infrastructure eliminates visual clutter, enhancing the overall aesthetics of the urban area.
