Fisheries department officials said that dredging will be taken up to remove silt accumulated at the estuary and wharf of the fisheries port in the ciy.
At a meeting convened to discuss the problems faced by the fisheries sector by assembly speaker UT Khader and District Minister Dinesh Gundurao at the Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru, officials said that Rs 2.5 crore has been released for taking up the dredging.
The dredging will be taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 29 crore.
The tender process has been completed and a work order is pending to be issued, officials said. Dinesh said that an estimate of Rs 49.5 crore has been submitted to the government to complete the third phase of the expansion of the fisheries harbour in Mangaluru. The proposal will have to be approved by the cabinet, he said.
Dakshina Kannada has 3,406 fishing boats, of which 1,660 are motorised, 1,432 mechanised boats and 314 are traditional boats. The mechanised boats will be given 2 lakh kilolitres of subsidised diesel from this year.
